Water In the cabin

After 17 years, I have found some sources of water:

  1. Leaks through the mast collar into the cabin via electrical wires for lights and VHF antenna.
  2. Chain plates. (See Alerts)
  3. Genoa tracks leaking through to the cabin (behind the teak strips).
  4. The sink in the head goes below the water line on port tack when the boat is healed at more than 30°.
  5. Stuffing box.
  6. Icebox drain.
  7. Lazerette lid leaks when I wash down with the boat slightly healed to that side so the channel won't drain into the cockpit. See #16
  8. The main traveler rail leaks at the screws when I wash down the boat.
  9. Engine exhaust plumbing is leaky.
  10. Head lever left on "Flush" instead of "Dry bowl".
  11. Forepeak hatch. I got tired of the sheet of plexiglass an foam seal so I installed a new Lewmar hatch with an aluminum frame, the Ocean 60 from WMP.
  12. Toe rail bedding gone bad. (Ka Nalu)
  13. Vents when healed over hard and cracked plumbing (Ka Nalu)
  14. Un-caulked Fuel filler and holding tank suction deck fittings. (Ka Nalu)
  15. Air Vent (yes, there is one) for the galley sink -- when healed over, water can be "pushed" up thru the thru hull and up and into the sink -- too much and it can go up the air vent. (Ka Nalu)
  16. Regarding the lazaret hatch seal leaking, we found that this was a big problem, not while washing the boat, but while sailing on starboard tack in a never ending rainstorm. We solved this the way Clark should have, by installing a drain in the port forward corner of the drain channel around the hatch. For the upper fitting we took a small "countersunk" type through hull fitting, sawed off most of the flange on two opposing sides and 5200'd it in. We had drilled the hole and them filed it down to allow the flange to set in almost flush with the drain channel surface. For an outlet we used a small (probably is 3?8" or 1/2" nominal) surface flange through hull fitting. The outlet is about an inch above the cockpit floor near the front. A length of hose between the two finishes it off. We do also have weatherstrip foam stuck to the underside of the hatch, but the drain is the real problem solver. (Steve P)
